Why Remembering the Lord by Breaking Bread on the Lord’s Day is Important

BREADKV.jpg (5810 bytes)Because the Lord Jesus asked us to do it and if we love Him, that is sufficient reason. "This do in remembrance of Me" (Luke 22:19).

Because if we love the Lord Jesus, we will respect His commandments and not ignore them (John 14:15, 21). We are His friends if we do as He commands (John 15:14).

Because it is one of only two ordinances commanded by the Lord for His people (Baptism and the Lord’s Supper—Luke 22:8-20). "Whatsoever He says unto you, do it" (John 2:5).

Because it was of primary importance as the Lord emphasized by direct revelation to His apostles (1 Corinthians 11:23–26).

Because the Lord’s Supper replaced the Jewish Passover in God’s arrangement as the primary memorial feast for His people (1 Corinthians 5:7; Luke 22:8–20). "The Lord’s Passover" (Exodus 12:11) has become "The Lord’s Supper" (1 Corinthians 11:20).

Because it was one of the four activities practiced regularly by the first believers (Acts 2:42).BoBSm.jpg (12528 bytes)

Because it was the central purpose for which the early church gathered (Acts 20:7)—not for preaching, music or children’s meetings.

Because it is considered by God to be of major importance—not only to do it, but to do it worthily (1 Corinthians 11:27–34).

Because worship of the Lord Jesus honors and pleases Him (John 5:23; 4:23). Note the Lord’s commendation of Mary of Bethany (Luke 10:39–42) and the woman who washed His feet (Luke 7:36–47).

Because our power in prayer is strengthened when "we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight" (1 John 3:22).

Because we tend to forget, ignore or allow to grow dim the remembrance of both the Person and the means by which we will enter Heaven. Never leave your first love for the Lord, for He will notice it (Revelation 2:4).

Because eternally we will be brought to remember He has washed us by His blood (Revelation 1:5). He will appear before us eternally as the Lamb slain for our sins (Revelation 5:6, 12).

Because it is an expression of our joint participation in His saving work and our unity in Him (1 Corinthians 10:16–17). We cannot express our unity as a body if only a fragment is in attendance.
